All are invited to attend this fun and unique poetry event. A live haiku contest! The evening will open with a presentation on haiku and performances by the Magpie Haiku & Tanka Poets. A spectacular photo by Jeff Cruz will then be unveiled, and Fergus Crawford will play classical guitar while participants have 30 minutes to compose their haiku in response to the image displayed.
Yes, you read that correctly and it will be awesome – a perfect fusion of poetry, art, and music.
Some members of the Magpie Haiku & Tanka Poets will judge the haiku and select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, who will receive the entry fees as cash prizes. The winning haiku will also be published in an upcoming issue of Wax Poetry and Art Magazine. The winning poet will also receive a print of the image displayed (or a coupon for another print from JCFA), as well as a copy of Love in a Handful of Dust.
Anyone can enter, and anyone can win.

Bios of the artists:
The Magpie Haiku & Tanka Poets took flight in 2001, and have been flying high ever since. Their first poetry anthology, A Piece of Egg Shell, appeared in 2004 and their second anthology, Weathered Wings, is about to be published. Over the years, the indidivual members have accumulated their own publishing credits, plus some poetry awards. As a group, they give readings and lead workshops, and also meet with each other to share their work. These magpies enjoy their stretching their wings!
Jeff Cruz loves to be behind the lens first of all. After that, he loves movies, making sand castles, and ice cream sandwiches, in no particular order!
Fergus picked up the guitar at the age of 15 after having extensive piano training and performing rock, jazz and blues piano. After completing his History degree, Fergus has taken Music on full-time, and is currently in his final year of a Music BA at the University of Calgary. He is studying classical guitar. His true passions remain with folk and blues.
