We are finally coming to understand bullying as a (potentially very serious) problem to be solved rather than a ritual of childhood to be endured. But if we focus on discrete behaviors, we’ll simply look for ways to stamp out the problem – by threatening bullies with punitive “consequences”. Alfie Kohn asks us instead to consider the systemic features of traditional schooling that feed a culture of bullying, including competition and discipline policies that might themselves be described as a kind of bullying – of kids by adults. Ultimately, we’ll have to work with students to create a sense of community in schools that not only pre-empts bullying but actively promotes caring.
Alfie Kohn is the author of 12 books, including PUNISHED BY REWARDS, THE SCHOOLS OUR CHILDREN DESERVE, UNCONDITIONAL PARENTING, THE HOMEWORK MYTH, and most recently, FEEL-BAD EDUCATION. He lectures widely throughout the U.S. and Canada and has been described by Time magazine as America’s “most outspoken critic of education’s fixation on grades and test scores”. Kohn lives (actually) in the Boston area and (virtually) at www.alfiekohn.org
