Stop Making Sense at containR (Friday, Aug. 22)
Sadly, the weather forecast says there is a very high probability that Calgary Cinematheque’s screening of the awesome Talking Heads concert film will be rained out. If that happens, you’ll have to settle for grabbing a copy of the soundtrack on vinyl from Hot Wax (closes at 6 p.m.) and moving the party to the other cool shipping container in the neighbourhood: Container Bar. If the weather holds, bone-up on pre-show conversation with Swerve‘s poseur’s guide.
Xposure 2014 Wrap-Up Party with The Wisers, Craic the Lens and A Day As Wolves at Morgan’s Pub (Friday, Aug. 22)
The three co-winners of X92.9 FM’s annual battle of the local bands toast victory with a joint show at Morgan’s Pub. A Day as Wolves and The Wisers open X-Fest next weekend. Ticketfly has the $10 tickets.
Expo Latino at Prince’s Island Park (Friday, Aug. 22 to Sunday, Aug. 24)
Prince’s Island Park comes alive with the sounds of Cuba’s Haila, Jose Alberto, Grupo Mania, and more this weekend as the annual Expo Latino moves in. Again, looking at the gloomy forecast for the weekend, it seems Saturday will likely be the best day for the salsa dance showcases and tango cabarets. A weekend pass will run you $45; day passes cost between $10 – $25. It’s also Carifest this weekend, which you can find out more about in our 5 Family Friendly Things To Do blog.
Meet an Innovator: Jeff de Boer at Telus Spark (Saturday, Aug. 23)
Jeff de Boer is best known for his metalworking (he famously designs suits of armour for cats and mice and created the tin-toy sculpture at the Calgary Airport), but he’s testing the digital waters with new works like the tech tie, a digital necktie whose pattern can be changed via a smartphone. You can see a model at Telus Spark on Saturday or in the video above. Hanging out with de Boer is included with the price of admission (which you can buy online for $12.95 to $19.95, depending on how old you are) If you want to learn more about de Boer, check out Swerve‘s Q&A with the artist from Friday’s magazine.
Sixth Annual Lickie!Lick! Ice Cream Ride starting at Pumphouse Park (Sunday, Aug. 24)
This is a system that makes a lot of sense. You get on your bike starting at Pumphouse Park and pedal until you get to Amatto Gelato in Kensington. Then, you refuel with some gelato and jump back on your bike to pedal to the next frozen-treat location. I believe this is a zero-calorie footprint endeavour by Bike Bike (admittedly, I haven’t done the math). Check out bikebikeblog.com for more info; ride starts at 5:30 p.m.
Bonus Viking Funeral of the Weekend: Oderus Urungus, Gwar
Bizarre metal band Gwar lost lead singer, Dave Brockie a.k.a. Oderus Urungus, to a heroin overdose this year. Band members sent him (or at least his costume) off in style with a Viking funeral at Gwar-B-Q.
A very fitting tribute for a metal superstar. —Jon Roe
