The Betty Mitchell Awards at Stage West (Monday, Aug. 18)
Celebrate the best of Calgary’s theatre season with the principal players at the Betty Mitchell Awards. Theatre Calgary’s The Mountaintop is up for five of the Bee Kingdom designed trophies; Alberta Theatre Projects’ You Will Remember Me for seven; and TC’s Mary Poppins could be flying away with nine in her umbrella. Tickets ($65) are available through Stage West’s box office at 403-243-6642.
Earth, Wind & Fire at Jubilee Auditorium (Wednesday, Aug. 20)
Even from the back of the house (and there are still tickets available in that section for Earth, Wind & Fire’s show at the Jube), you will be able to see bassist Verdine White making this face.
That’s worth the $69.40 admission price from Ticketmaster alone.
Field Trips of Terror: Psycho Beach Party at Aloft Hotel Pool (Thursday, Aug. 21)
Everyone survived the BassBus ride out to Cobb’s Corn Field for Calgary Underground Film Festival’s screening of Pumpkinhead last week. Further terrors await poolsie at the Aloft Hotel at the screening of the campy Psycho Beach Party. Tickets for the bus are sold out, but you can still get in by meeting the crew at the pool at the University of Calgary’s hotel.
Top Cat Swing—Mid Summer’s Night Swing at Poppy Plaza (Thursday, Aug. 21)
Provided the weather co-operates (it’s not looking good on the long term forecast), you can swing out in the waning summer air with Top Cat Swing. Keep an eye on the forecast as Thursday approaches.
GlobalFest at Elliston Park (Ongoing)
Vietnam and France display their fireworks know-how on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. France’s program includes this duet by Pascal Obispo and Florent Pagny as well as some Bruno Mars; Vietnam dips into the Queen and blends it with some Vietnamese folk music. Entry is $20 and you can grab tickets online. —Jon Roe
