Thriller: The Music of Michael Jackson at Jack Singer Concert Hall, Epcor Centre (Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17)

The music of Michael Jackson is perfect fodder for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. The Gloved One’s backing tracks, many of them produced by Quincy Jones, already use  aa lot of sounds of the orchestra. The CPO’s resident conductor Adam Johnson sat down with Swerve for tomorrow’s magazine to hand out his favourite tracks and explain how the orchestra augments the classic music. Tickets are still available to the weekend’s shows.

Butter—Sled Island Visual Arts Fundraiser at Contemporary Calgary (Friday, May 16)
Sled Island survived the flood, but it still needs to raise funds to keep the different elements of the festival running. The fest combines with Big Rock and Contemporary Calgary for a unique fundraiser for the visual arts program. There’ll be DJs, dancing and a silent “favour” auction, where you can win a custom cupboard painting by Daniel J Kirk, life advice from Dana Buzzee and Jodie Rose, succulent shopping with Tyler Los-Jones and more. FA Cup Final: Arsenal F.C. vs. Hull City A.F.C. at the Pig & Duke (Saturday, May 17)

What better place to watch Arsenal fight for its first trophy in nearly a decade than at Calgary’s Arsenal bar? Arsenal finished fourth in the Barclays Premier League this season, guaranteeing a spot in the Champions League. As for Hull City, they finished 16th, just four points above relegation. Kickoff is at 10 a.m., but arrive early to secure a seat. Herringer Kiss Gallery examines the early career of the two Albertan brothers near the 20th anniversary of Roy’s death. Some of the paintings, including Roy’s Cafe Couple and Harry’s Sun Forest above, have never been seen before. The opening reception is Saturday afternoon, 2-5 p.m., and Harry will be in attendance. Stoner Rock Guy presents VictHAIRYa Day at The Drum & Monkey & Bamboo Lounge (Sunday, May 18)

Another long weekend, another bender, another questionable pun. The Stoner Rock Guy brings out the stoner rock for a Sunday bash. Hear the headliners, Regina’s Black Thunder, above. The show is free and starts right at 4:20 p.m.
