Jazz Trio at Gravity Espresso & Wine Bar (Tuesday, Oct. 29)
The trendy Inglewood spot is hosting jazz on the last Tuesdays of the month for a low cover price of $10. The best part? It’s wine night at Gravity and you can get 25 percent off a bottle. The featured group this month is the trio of vocalist Elsie Osborne, guitarist Ralf Buschmeyer (whom you can see in the clip above) and bassist Wes Caswell.
La Dolce Vita at the Engineered Air Theatre (Tuesday, Oct. 29)
The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s Festival Italiano takes a turn for the film: a screening of Fellini’s La Dolce Vita starts the week of events, then the orchestra plays Italian film music in concert on Wednesday. Tickets are for sale online.
The Paper Kites with Reuben & The Dark at The Gateway (Wednesday, Oct. 30)
Calgary band Reuben & The Dark have already touched both coasts on their current tour. They played New York a few weeks ago and then joined Australian band The Paper Kites on the west coast for the start of their tour. Ticketmaster has the tickets, though there’s not many left.
Mat the Alien Alien Autopsy Party at the HiFi Club (Thursday, Oct. 31)
The Whistler resident and Shambhala regular DJ touches down for a Halloween party. Despite the party’s name, I don’t think he’ll be going under the knife, unless things go horribly awry. HiFi Club owners Smalltown DJs and resident DJ Ivan Rankic open the night. Tickets are online.
Darkness Falls at the Drum & Monkey (Thursday, Oct. 31)
Halloween is a slam dunk night for cover bands: it makes a lot of sense to see people dressed up as other people on a night when everyone’s in costume. Darkness Falls will do their best Turbonegro impression. It’d be apt if they played “All My Friends Are Dead,” which you can hear above. —Jon Roe
