Calling all paper obsessed Calgarians: prepare yourselves for a midway of a different kind.

Paper Stampede runs tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature a large assortment of stationary items, vintage maps and a collection of old books, plus a heck of a lot more.

This unique event is being hosted by the creative folks at UPPERCASE, an award-winning quarterly publication with beautiful design, that began simply as a retail space and gallery showcasing designer Janine Vangool’s love of, you guessed it, paper (among other things, of course). After spending eight years in her Art Central space, Janine’s collection of pretty little things has grown.

“I pulled everything out and found some really nice paper stuff,” says Vangool, the publisher, editor, designer and creator of what eventually became UPPERCASE magazine. “I’ve sorted through my stockpiles of paper ephemera and created little bundles. And that’s become the focus of this sell-off.”

Papier Valise, an online boutique that sells everything from colourful clothespins to vintage buttons and paper, will also be participating in the sale.

The event takes place in lieu of last month’s cancelled studio sale which had been scheduled to run a day after flood waters forced their way into Calgary’s downtown core. With news of Art Central being slated for redevelopment, the small team has begun the process of relocating to anew office space, and selling off goods that are no longer being used.

“[Moving from Art Central] is like the end of an era,” says Vangool. “This is one of a kind stuff from the history of UPPERCASE.”

Will parting with all of this fabulous history be difficult? In the same way Vangool views a beautifully preserved sheet of vintage stationary, it seems she also sees the potential in this move.

“Sometimes change is good. It’s like a fresh start.”
