1. Anne of Green Gables at Max Bell Theatre, Epcor Centre (Opening Friday, April 26)
Theatre Calgary presents the classic Canadian musical, beloved the world over, as you can see from the Japanese adaptation above. The BBC sent a reporter to Prince Edward Island last year to explore the widespread admiration of the pig-tailed little red-headed girl, which you can see on their website. Closer to home, Theatre Calgary’s artistic director Dennis Garnhum is one of many Canadians who have fond memories of Anne, as he tells Swerve in a Q&A about the musical and his connections to it.
2. Weird Al Yankovic at Stampede Corral (Friday, April 26)
The Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo may be sold out, but you can still tap into your geekdom with Weird Al. The parody master plays the Corral. (Also, if you haven’t read Heath McCoy’s cover story from last week’s Swerve about the founder of the Expo, Kandrix Foong, it’s worth your time.)
3. Serenity at The Plaza (Saturday, April 27)
The much-beloved and quickly departed sci-fi series Firefly was extended into a movie, Serenity. Nathan Fillion stars in the flick, and he’ll be at the Comic Expo this weekend—what a coincidence! The Fifth Reel presents the movie accompanied by live music by The Cable-knits. Have a listen below.
4. Taj Mahal at Mac Hall, U of C (Saturday, April 27)
Not every event this weekend is tied into the Expo (though who knows, maybe Taj Mahal is a big Doctor Who fan). Up north at the U of C, the Calgary Folk Music Festival presents Taj Mahal, whose blues mixes in his Caribbean roots and African beats.
5. Calgary Folk Music Festival Singer-Songwriter Competition at the Ship and Anchor Pub (Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28)
Also on the Folk Fest front, it’s the final weekend of the annual Singer-Songwriter Competition at the Ship. See the finalists in Beaver Tales, Places & Spaces, Pros and Prose and Eye Candy categories (you can see one of the video finalists for that category, J’essaie by Mireille Moquin, above). And, in case you missed it, they announced the full lineup for the Calgary summer staple this week. Take a look.
Bonus Video of a Bear for the Weekend
The bears are awake. Keep that in mind for any of your excursions to the great outdoors from now on. Obviously keep your distance if you see one, even if they do look as playful as the one in the video above, rolling in the snow. —Jon Roe
