1. Last Time Around at National Music Centre (Saturday, April 13)

MTT Fest was supposed to hold its second annual noise-rock festival this weekend, but instead they’re pulling the plug on the whole operation. As one final send off, they’re hosting a party at the National Music Centre with some of the bands tapped to play the festival, including Renny Wilson (sample a few tracks off his September 2012 release, Sugarglider, above), LSD and the Search For God (which you can sample below).

2. William Parker Trio at Festival Hall (Saturday, April 13)

Calgary Folk Music Festival presents the free-jazz bassist in a trio format (with Hamid Drake on drums and Dave Burrell on piano). Drake is a longtime Parker collaborator; Burrell’s 1969 album Echo is included on the Village Voice‘s list of 10 free jazz albums you have to hear before you die (the National Music Centre’s blog has that tidbit and more in their preview of the show).

3. Law Day at Calgary Courts Centre (Saturday, April 13)

The original Judge Dredd movie ruined the word “law” for me. Every time I hear the word, I get a vision of Sylvester Stallone slur-shouting it. Law Day’s day full of activities at the Calgary Courts Centre will give you plenty of occasion to shout about being “the law,” though you may want to hold yourself to one or two times.

4. The Calgary Music Collectors Show at Acadia Recreation Centre (Sunday, April 14)
Posters, vinyl, CDs, shirts, posters—the Calgary Music Collectors Show has it all. Take your significant other and make a day of it, as our Cheap Date suggests.

5. The Tokyo String Quartet at Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, U of C (Sunday, April 14 and Monday, April 15)

This will be your last chance to see the Tokyo String Quartet—two members are retiring this summer and the remaining two have decided not to continue performing under the name. They play two shows, presented by the Calgary Pro Musica society. Find out more about their 44-year history in our poseur’s guide from Friday’s magazine.

Tumblr of the Weekend: Sports Balls Replaced With Cats

There are unfortunately no pictures of golf balls replaced by cats in that Tumblr—that would’ve been far too perfect with the Masters on this weekend. But the whimsical imagery is fun to look at, nonetheless. —Jon Roe
