1. Cloudburst at the Plaza Theatre (Opening Saturday, March 2)

The Thom Fitzgerald comedy stars Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker as two elderly lesbians who flee Maine for Nova Scotia and the altar. The film played the festival circuit a few years ago and collected prizes from the Atlantic Film Festival, Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival, Edmonton International Film Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival and more. You have a limited time to check it out: it’s only in town until Thursday, March 7.

2. LOL@002 with Sean Lecomber at Local 002 (Saturday, March 2)
Lecomber headlines a night of comedy with support from Brad Muise and Jeff Kubik. You can hear some of Lecomber’s material on YouTube, but be wary of the NSFW language.

3. Rockets and Dinosaurs CD release party at the Den, U of C (Saturday, March 2)

The 2012 X92.9 Xposure winners put their prize money to good use. The Calgary pop-punk band spent it on crafting their first full-length release, which they’ll be celebrating at the Den on Saturday. Sneak a listen at the album from their Bandcamp site below.

4. The Fashion Olympics Paper Dress Competition at Southcentre Mall (Saturday, March 2)

Robert Munsch’s princess was a trend-setter, apparently. As part of the lead-up to the launch of their Calgary Campus in April and the Fashion Institute in May, Olds College is holding a Paper Dress Competition at Southcentre Mall featuring 25 teams of budding designers from 10 Calgary High Schools. They have three hours Saturday (9 a.m. to noon) to make a dress from paper. The results will be judged at 1 p.m. by a panel including stylist Kim Flanagan and designer Michelle Baynes.

5. Baroque and Glass at Hope Lutheran Church (Sunday, March 3)

Philip Glass is a towering figure in modern music, but often his music sounds far different than typical classical fare. The Kensington Sinfonia is highlighting two Glass pieces that match-up aurally with famous Baroque composers.
