Call it the school of fake knocks.
For the last six months, Rebecca Northan and Adrian Young have been working with a group of emerging actors, schooling them in the fine arts of self-promotion, self-producing and stage combat.
They’ve also been rehearsing Kung Fu Panties, a show written by Northan with fights choreographed by Young. (It premiered at Ground Zero Theatre in 2011 and Young won a Betty Mitchell Award for his work creating the stage fights.)
Convocation at Kung Fu U goes Wednesday night when Kung Fu Panties—Redux premieres at Loose Moose Theatre. The graduates will showcase their recent training in comedy and taking a punch in 90 minutes of broad humour (we mean that in the best way) that pokes fun at the tired conventions of action movies. That is not the easiest thing to do onstage with a tiny budget, but Northan is nothing if not inventive.
Let’s just say the car chase will have you looking at your office chair in a new way.
Kung Fu Panties—Redux run Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays at 10:30 p.m. at Loose Moose Theatre, 1235 26th Ave. S.E..
Tickets are $20 (students) and $25. Available online or by calling 403-265-5682.
