1. All Star Tribute to the Band at the Ironwood (Friday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 16)

Levon Helm died less than a year ago, and so there was a big tribute to him at the Grammy Awards last weekend. Gawker has a video of the full performance, if you want to check it out. Closer to home, the Front Porch Roots Revue are rocking the Ironwood with their own tribute to The Band in two shows this weekend.

2. Family Quest at Heritage Park (Friday, Feb. 15 to Monday, Feb. 18)
For those out there looking to spend Family Day weekend with their family—strange, but all right—Heritage Park has a quest for you: six-challenges, parents vs. kids at the Gasoline Alley Museum. Create your own radio play, try your hands at Auto Golf, play a game of Place that Face and more.

3. Dustin Bentall and the Smokes and Lindi Ortega at the Palomino (Saturday, Feb. 16)

If, instead, you want to spend Family Day weekend drinking whisky and eating barbecued meats, then the Palomino might be the place for you. Dustin Bentall, Vancouver-based folk artist and son of Barney, and his band The Smokes co-headline with Lindi Ortega, who impressed audiences this past summer at the Calgary Folk Fest. The Toronto-born artist lives in Nashville and she sat down for an interview with the Calgary Herald‘s Eric Volmers. Read it here.

4. Honens Storytellers at Festival Hall (Sunday, Feb. 17)

Honens laureate Hong Xu and One Yellow Rabbit associate artist Denise Clarke combine music and storytelling for a perfect Family Day weekend afternoon on Sunday. Clarke will read The Story of Babar and poems by Ogden Nash while Xu plays Francis Poulenc and Camille Saint-Saëns.

5. Calgary Reads Family Day Short Film Matinee at Globe Theatre (Monday, Feb. 18)

Calgary Reads screens the short film The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, which beat out the Calgary-produced Wild Life by Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby for the 2011 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. The price is a scant $5 per person, so put aside any civic-pride-based resentment and enjoy this magical short.
