1. High Performance Rodeo (Opening Friday, Jan. 4)
One Yellow Rabbit’s annual festival of international and local arts kicks off at noon with the chimes of the Calgary carillon ringing out from the Calgary Tower (which will happen each week day as long as the festival is on). It continues in the evening with Downstage’s 10-minute play festival, where you can witness the results of 24 hours of work by six theatre companies. Bruce Weir has the details of that, and four other events for you to check out from the opening week of the Rodeo.
2. Canadian Championships/Canada Cup 2 at Olympic Oval (Friday, Jan. 4 to Sunday, Jan. 6)
The process for selecting who represents Canada at various speed-skating competitions is a long one, and it requires a lot of events like the races going on this weekend at the Olympic Oval. Witness World Cup and World Sprint Team hopefuls race head-to-head all weekend. Check out the PDF schedule here for the times for the various distances.
3. Rewind Your VCR at Southcentre Shopping Centre (Saturday, Jan. 5)
If you haven’t already rid yourself of your VCR, there’s a great opportunity for you to properly recycle it and generate funds for a good cause this Saturday. REWIND, a new TV channel, is appropriately sponsoring the event and will donate $25 to the World Wildlife Fund for each piece of now seemingly ancient technology dropped off when the mall is open, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 8 p.m.
4. Roughnecks Fan Fest at the Scotiabank Saddledome (Saturday, Jan. 5)
It’s a week out from the opening game of the National Lacrosse League season and the Calgary Roughnecks are looking to generate excitement with their Fan Fest this weekend. They’ll be holding an open practice in the morning (starting at 9:30 a.m.) and then the Fan Fest officially gets going at noon, where you can get autographs from players, meet Martin Gelinas, Rob Cote, Jon Cornish and Jacques Cloutier, and try your hand at shooting a lacrosse ball as hard as possible. The best part? It’s all free.
5. The Runaway Five at Wine-Ohs (Saturday, Jan. 5)
The catchy tunes of most video games are ripe for improvisation, as The Runaway Five show in the above video. Hear jazz versions of the tunes of Final Fantasy, Sonic the Hedgehog, Halo, Earthbound and more at Wine-Ohs. —Jon Roe
