One of Swerve‘s very favourite people, George Webber, will be joined by author Aritha van Herk (we like her a lot, too) at a photo presentation and reading today, Sunday, Jan. 27.
The pair’s latest work, Prairie Gothic, pairs Webber’s black-and-white images of life on the prairies with text from van Herk, who is also a creative writing professor at the U of C.
The 192-page, large-format book is packed with images taken between 1984 and 2010. “I’m hoping to tell not just a specific story, but also to make a photograph that is attached to the larger structure of myth, tradition and symbolism,” he told Bruce Weir in a Swerve cover story on Prairie Gothic.
The event at Shelf Life Books at the corner of 4th Street and 13th Avenue S.W. runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
