Friday night dance party
The Polar Music Festival takes over the BMO Centre Friday night, Dec. 28, with a lineup featuring Deadmau5, Chris Lake and more. (Wear white!)
Battle of the ’80s bands
They’re here for a good time, not a long time, but Trooper has managed to fit a stop in Calgary onto its tour schedule. The perennial party band is joined by fellow CanCon rockers Chilliwack at the Century Casino Calgary on Saturday, Dec. 29.
Meanwhile, Platinum Blonde rings in the New Year, Monday at the Deerfoot Inn & Casino. Sure, it’s expensive at $99 a ticket (plus $49.95 if you want to chow down on the buffet), but you’ve had 20 years to save up for a ticket.
Charlie Brown is going, going, gone
It’s time to say goodbye to Alberta Theatre Projects’ You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. The charming musical wraps up Sunday, Dec. 30 at the Martha Cohen Theatre. Catch the feel-good production and counter the post-Christmas letdown.
Spark a child’s imagination
Here’s an idea for getting the kids out of the house before everyone in it goes stir-crazy over the holidays (what do you mean school isn’t back in until Jan. 8?!): in celebration of its first year, Telus Spark is offering free admission for children. There’s some small print (valid for one regular child—ages 3 to 12—admission only; valid to Jan. 6, 2013; limit of one voucher per household, per visit), but a visit to the science centre is guaranteed to leave the kids with smiles on their faces and some new ideas percolating in their brains.
Last week to catch Mosaic
And as the year comes to a close, so, too, does an exhibit by Ron Moppett at TrepanierBaer Gallery. If you regularly stroll the East Village, you know the Calgary artist through his piece Thesamewaybetter/reader, the mosaic tiled wall on Riverfront Lane.
Ron Moppett: Mosaic showcases the work of the artist, offering “a diverse view of pop culture and a glimpse into the ‘dailiness’ of life,” according to the gallery. “A brilliant colourist, Moppett stencils and distills shapes with oil and acrylic paint, creating complex picture puzzles that hold multiple layers of meaning.”
The exhibit is on through Jan. 5, 2013. Contact the gallery (403-244-2066) for holiday hours.
