You’ve gotta love it when someone’s dream comes true. Calgarians can share in Arnel Pineda’s living his dream when Journey rolls into town Sunday with a show at the ‘Dome. The singer grew up in poverty in the Philippines, eventually becoming homeless after his mother died when he was 13. But he could always sing and eventually crafted a career fronting various bands.
Over in North America, Journey struggled to find a replacement after lead singer Steve Perry left the band in 1996. One day in 2007, lead guitarist Neal Schon was watching videos on Youtube when he came upon a video of Penida performing covers of Journey songs. The rest, as we all like to say, is history. Loverboy (who formed in Calgary, but were based in Vancouver) and Night Ranger open the show. Limited tickets at Ticketmaster.
Check out this short clip from Oprah in which the talk-show icon celebrates Pineda’s journey and the band performs “Don’t Stop Believing.”
